Curriculum Information
St Monica’s offers seven classes. The staff of St Monica’s continue to learn as much as teach. We have a high level of professional qualifications among the staff (see Annual Report) ranging from Teaching degrees, double and triple degrees in education and business management to Master degrees in Educational Leadership and Special Education. St Monica’s offers specialised lessons in Physical Education and Music.
English
For two hours each day children participate in literacy block which includes whole group, small group and individual activities in reading and writing. Rigby Literacy is the program used to teach guided reading. Literacy activities are also incorporated into other key learning areas. Daily reading is supported and a love of books encouraged.
Religion
Religion is taught from syllabus documents that includes the strands of prayer and celebration, beliefs, scripture and morality.
Health & Physical Education
A Physical Educational specialist is currently on staff. This teacher is responsible for the organisation of a coherent Physical Education curriculum at St Monica’s. This teacher takes each class for a specialist lesson once a week in accordance with the Queensland Syllabus guidelines. Individual teachers may then conduct follow up lessons with their own classes. Mathematics
St Monica's are currently using the "Targeting Maths" series across the classes. We will soon be modifying our program to incorporate the new Mathematics syllabus currently on trial in some schools.
Science
The Science syllabus involves students in the study of broad range of areas. This include Earth and Beyond, Life and Living, Energy and Change, Science and Society, and Natural and Processed materials. Science is taught as part of a connected unit of work with other key learning areas.
Studies of Society & The Environment
The SOSE syllabus involves students in the study of a braod range of areas. This includes: Culture and Identity, Systems, resources and Power, Time, Continuity and Change, and Place and Space. SOSE is incorporated into a connected unit of work.
Technology
Technology outcomes are integrated into units of work that combine Science, SOSE, H and PEd and the Arts.
The Arts
The Arts syllabus includes music, dance, drama, visual arts and media. All students participate in weekly music lessons coordinated and taught by a specialist music teacher. Instrumental music is also offered to students from grades 3 to 7. Dance, drama,visual arts and media are incorporated into class programs and integrated with other curriculum areas. The entire school produces a musical every second year.
These core learning areas are designed to increase students' knowledge and skills and to provide a range of learning opportunities.

Students, parents and other family members of St Monica’s have many opportunities to participate in a very diverse range of extra curricular activities such as:

- Eisteddfods
- Parish events such as St Patricks day, Children’s Liturgy and Children’s Mass
- External Academic Competitions
- Local town activities, i.e. Oakey Show, May Day, Santa Fair, Carols by Candlelight, Remembrance Day, Anzac Day
- St Monica’s Annual Race Day is a real hit - a joint venture with the parish and school communities equally sharing responsibilities.
- Soccer, Rugby League, Aussie Rules, Cricket, Netball, Softball, Indoor Sports (all played at club level)
- Instrumental music.
